Why Voice Produces Better Prompts

When you type a prompt to Claude Code or Cursor, you unconsciously minimize. Every character costs effort, so you write:

"Make a function that dedupes users by email"

When you speak the same prompt, you naturally elaborate:

"I need a function that takes an array of user objects where each user has an email, name, and created_at timestamp. Deduplicate by email address but keep the most recently created entry for each email. Return the deduplicated array sorted by created_at descending. Also handle the edge case where email is null or undefined — skip those entries. TypeScript, and add a JSDoc comment."

Same intent. Dramatically different output from the AI. The spoken version produces correct, well-documented code on the first try. The typed version produces something that needs 3-4 rounds of correction.

Noisy environments: Open offices, coffee shops, airports. I need either a quiet space or a directional mic.

Precise syntax: When I'm writing a complex regex or a specific SQL query, sometimes I need to type it. Voice + AI handles most of this, but occasionally I need exact character-level control.

Code review: Reading and commenting on PRs is still mostly a visual/typing activity. I'll sometimes dictate longer review comments, but navigating diffs is visual.

The Physical Difference

Pair Programming with Voice

This was my biggest concern before switching. How does pair programming work when one person is talking to their computer?

In practice: fine. In remote pair programming (most of tech), you're already talking to your partner. You alternate between talking to them and talking to the AI. It's slightly weird for the first 10 minutes and then it's just... how you work.
